APRIL GREGORY

"I love to explore and question, search out, and dig up... these are things that motivate me in life and in art."

How would you describe your work? "My work tends to to be "visually active" either through texture or color or surface ornamentation or through a combination of these."

What is your favorite form to work with? "I simply love to make teapots.  There's something about their functionality that appeals to me. They are all more or less functional although because of their weight, size or other factors it may be highly impractical to use them.  I think of them as functional sculptures."

Where do you draw your influences? "I tend to identify with the aesthetic and philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement and some of my greatest influences come from the artists and craftsmen of that time period.  However, childhood memories, impressions, mythology, fairytale, plants, the ocean and nature in general are some of my other influences."

Can you describe your creation process? "My work does not progress in a linear fashion and at any time it may change.   I tend to work in themes or "modes," as I like to call them.  I revisit these themes at different periods.  I think of my work as progressing in a cyclical spiral fashion. For example, one year I made several teapots inspired by Japanese kimonos and obis.  Then I made several pieces inspired by the ocean, and then several pieces inspired by leaves.  I then revisited the ocean theme last year.  Earlier this year I revisited the leaf theme and also got inspired by doves and pears.  Right now I'm still inspired by pears, but I'm also inspired by flowers, mythology and images of women.  I guess I get inspired easily."

April is a self proclaimed "air force brat" and spent 8 years of her childhood in Japan, followed by 6 years in California.  Both of these places, including all that was experienced within each remain strong influences on her work.  April now resides and works out of Oklahoma City, OK.
