This pot was made of local clay from Cherokee County that I dug and processed myself. It was coil-made, stone-burnished, and traditional wood-fired. The incised designs are all similar to those found on old pottery artifacts.
This pot was the second place winner of the 2010 SWAIA Eastern Woodland Pottery prize.

This pot was made from local clay from Cherokee County that I dug and processed myself. I hand-coiled and stone-burnished it. It was kiln-fired and then wood re-fired.
It traveled throughout the Southeast with the "Cherokee Pottery: People of One Fire" exhibit for 3 years. Again, you see the friendship design and the curvilinear designs incised into leather-hard clay.

8/31/2010 Lisa Rutherford | AVAILABLE “From the East” by Lisa Rutherford – view portfolio Item Number: 103949 Medium: Pottery
Joel Queen, Eastern Cherokee, gave me the clay to make this pot. It was burnished with a stone and then the designs were incised into the leather-hard clay. The pot was kiln fired, then re-fired in a wood fire resulting in the smoke clouds and subtle color variations.
The design on top is sometimes known as the Friendship Design, which is a modern name, but the design is very old and is found on Cherokee pottery artifacts. The bottom curvilinear design is also found on old pottery and it is one one I use often and is sort of my signature design.

This was made with the coil method and is a smaller version of a typically Cherokee shaped pot. It was made of commercial clay, burnished with a stone, then the designs were incised into leather-hard clay. The pot was kiln fired, then re-fired in a wood fire resulting in the smoke clouds and subtle color variations.

This pot was hand-coiled and the design at the top was incised into the leather-hard clay before firing. It was polished with a stone and kiln fired. Since the commercial clay fires white, the pot was re-fired in a wood fire to get the smoke coloring. The highly burnished surface takes the smoke very well.
There are similar designs on old Cherokee pots -- there is a larger pot with a design very much like this one in the McClung Museum at Univ. of TN, Knoxville.
