This painting is one of my personal favorites; it was my first studio painting after returning from an amazing trip to Zapata Ranch, painting horses from life in Colorado. Working from sketches, photo reference and a very intense memory of the experience, I wanted to express the motion and intensity of the moment; the cool morning air cut by the warmth of the sun breaking over the mountains. I used a complimentary pallet to maintain the feel of that early morning light combined with loose, strong brushwork to convey the power of the horse's stride. The intentional use of lost and found edges solidly places the rider in the saddle as she became one with the horse. Spending a large part of my life with horses, thanks to my Dad, I found my knowledge and passion for them to be a great gift to me as a painter.
