On the tiny island of Vieques, just off the mainland of Puerto Rico, there is a living sculpture that has been formed and crafted for over three centuries by the caprices of Mother Nature. La Cieba began as a seedling around the time the conquistadors first set foot in the new world. For hundreds of years the tree has been growing near the shore of the Caribbean, basking in the uninterrupted sun, drinking in the daily showers, and relying on nectar-feeding bats for pollination. It withstood the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, and has since come back with huge pink blossoms and new growth. It is a survivor and has always been a symbol of Hope for the people of the island.
