I never really noticed any bats when I lived In NYC, not until I moved to the sunny south did I see any flying around. I only have a half hour window or so to watch them, they are everywhere around my yard and lakes that are across from my 100 year old house. I like to have apertivo hour to coincide with bat time when it's warm out. Last Spring in the south of France my wife and I did the same ritual in the village of Lagrasse where we lived. We would sit outside at twilight with a bottle of wine and a hunk of pate, hold hands and watch bats, our pre-dinner entertainment. Bats conjure up all kinds of imagery, they are scary to kids, bloodsuckers, get stuck in your hair, kill livestock etc...but they are pretty damn cute and misunderstood, they eat their weight in mosquitos. They make the strangest electronic clicking sound. These two paintings are more than just cool bats though, they deal with camaraderie, hanging with the pack, and in my case expanding the pack by choosing to finally start a family. I guess artists and creative types are kind of misunderstood too. You notice all the bats are smiling and happy to all be together, my work is never grim. These two paintings are two of my most favorite paintings I have done in awhile. I love the scale of life size figures, I love how the neutral colors of "Kissy Bat" turned out. I love gray flesh that also appears alive. Oh and I love espresso and wine, that is why I paint bottles and cups a lot.
