A few years ago, I had an unforgettable experience in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. I went there to photograph coastal brown bears along the park’s remote coast. The bears are not hunted here; they are curious and tolerant of human visitors, thus allowing close observation. One morning, my guide and I spent time watching a sow and her cub digging for clams. The cub grew tired of Mom looking for clams; he wanted to play. He bounded up to us at one point, seemingly wanting us to play with him! I tried to capture this fun moment in my painting.
