Item # ABMAvanyu
When I was first beginning to make Pottery under my mother and grandmother’s guidance I was taught some of the tribal designs our culture has been using to design pottery throughout the centuries. One of these designs has been dated back to AD 1000-1150.
This design is called the Avanyu, named for the horned serpent that serves as the mythological water Deity sacred to my people. When the world is in balance the Avanyu brings sustenance to the people. When there is unbalance the Avanyu may be disruptive and too much water may cause flooding. This design embodies the clouds, lightning, rain, and all bodies of water. I have been using this design on my pottery for 30 years. About 4 years ago I started my artistic movement into the bronze medium. One day I thought to myself how would the Avanyu look if it slithered off one of my pots. This piece is the result of that moment of imagination.
