Jane Radstrom captures intimate, candid moments in large pastel and mixed media paintings. “As a realist, I am aware that I am a part of a centuries-old tradition of artists depicting the human form, but I also want my art to respond to the current time period. I am inspired by photographers using manipulation of exposure to create images that are ‘real’, and yet cannot be seen by the naked eye. This is a quality I try to capture in ‘The Girls Series’ through unusual color, visible mark-making and recently, layering of poses.” At only 27 years old, the observation skills that Radstrom displays are remarkable. Focusing on nuances of body language and expression, she fluidly conveys the presence of her subjects.
Jane first studied drawing and painting at Watts Atelier San Diego, California. The methods practiced in atelier schools are based on meticulous renaissance traditions of masterful realism. She attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, earning a BFA with honors in 2008. She spent a year in Kansas City mentoring with renowned painter Mark English. Jane now lives the quiet life of a painter in San Francisco, CA.
