"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time."

Santa Fe, New Mexico artist, Jonathan Keeton, painting in watercolor, gouache, and acrylics as his mediums, approaches his work meditatively. In honor of the natural world he sees, Keeton comes at his creativeness with thought and contemplation, practicing the act of giving his attention on what he sees.

Keeton's landscapes and nocturnes are commanding in their execution and in their size, as he loves to paint large most of the time, since he believes that tends to draw the viewer into them. And it will....and it does! Due to the delicacy and demanding nature of watercolors, they do remain his preference in paints. Not only influenced, inspired and instructed by other artists in his life, Jonathan Keeton has a history going back to adolescence that bespeaks of a great interest in the fields of visual imagery such as paint study, theater, photography and thirty years spent as a pioneer in digital visual effects for television, films and commercials.

Today, he is a full-time artist who is mindfully anxious to make up for lost time. There is a meticulous kind of creativity in his paintings and as I see it, whatever Keeton feels he needs to pursue due to lost time, well....I see him as possessing it all along! That is the meticulousness about him and he is content to keep pushing!

Award winning pieces by Jonathan Keeton are available at Lovetts Fine Art Gallery

Lovetts Gallery proudly offers several of Jonathan Keeton's large paintings (small too) and you feel as if you are part of the experience when you stand there viewing them. He has paid great respect to the mysteries of the natural world and his work will give you that meditative feeling that the artist utilized in creating them.

One of the larger paintings by Jonathan Keeton that we have on display, Cataract Creek 02, was the first place winner of the Rocky Mountain National Watercolor Exhibition. This piece measures in at 57" x 37" and is an amazing watercolor on paper. While the picture below is breathtaking - you really have to see it in person here at Lovetts Fine Art Gallery to appreciate it in full.

I started this letter with a quote and I shall end with one. Both are from the author, Thomas Merton.

"There is always a temptation to diddle around in the contemplative life, making itsy-bitsy statues. There is always an enormous temptation in all of life to diddle around making itsy-bitsy friends and meals and journeys for itsy-bitsy years on end. It is so self-conscious, so apparently moral, simply to step aside from the gaps where the creeks and winds pour down, saying, I never merited this grace, quite rightly, and then to sulk along the rest of your days on the edge of rage.

I won't have it! The world is wilder than that in all directions, more dangerous and bitter, more extravagant and bright. We are making hay when we should be making whoopee; we are raising tomatoes when we should be raising Cain, or Lazarus.

Go into the gaps. If you can find them; they shift and vanish too. Stalk the gaps. Squeak into a gap in the soil, turn, and unlock-more than a maple--a universe. This is how you spend this afternoon, and tomorrow morning, and tomorrow afternoon.

Spend the afternoon.

You can't take it with you."
