A lone swallow flies across a rising moon.
The upper wing tip is very close to the marble disc, while the lower wing tip is about 5" away from it. This dramatic angle changes how the form of the bird works against the simple circle of the disc as one sees it from different points of view.
I'm "drawing outside the lines" with my swallow compositions. Normally, I do limited editions where #1 is as close as possible to the last of the edition. The swallows are still molded and cast with only the highest quality standards in mind. There are currently 3 different body designs; each with their own wing and body positions. I'll be using the birds in multiples, singles, groups as compositional elements in the making of unique pieces. These wall pieces on discs are simply the first incarnation of many variants to come. There will be flocks, free standing sculptures, even kinetic works to come.
This is not only fun for me to play with different compositions and presentations; but also gives the collector input into the process in designing sculptures to fit difficult spaces such as corners, over arched doors, or in garden areas. This frees the collector in those many frustrating situations of loving a piece but walking away as it just doesn't fit anywhere.
The swallow has a wingspan of 12".
