Julia Gwen Poncavage
In graphite, charcoal, soft pastel, and oil paint, Julia blends realism and imagination in works that act as the physical outpouring of inward faith. As a believer that good things take time, she has always enjoyed the discipline and patience that comes required with rendering a compelling scene, from portrait and figure to landscape and still life. Through the lens of making art as a sacred thing, she finds herself seeking moments of the visible world that touch at an inner life and luminosity lying beneath the surface. Julia views her work as aiming to capture this light, amplifying her subject’s beauty in motion and quiet power.
From her mentors, Julia learned carefully cultivated discipline and resilience and developed a deep and constant passion to create. This has resulted in many accolades including multiple publications in Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing magazine, as well as recognition as a semifinalist in the Art Renewal Center (ARC) annual salon. As a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), Julia continues to make work in northeastern Pennsylvania.
