The small orchard next to my home is near a woodland and attracts an assortment
of birds. Downy Woodpeckers are not an uncommon sight but they are still one of
my favorites. This painting is based on a scene I encountered in autumn after the
moss had turned brown and the apples were harvested. This little male was
foraging for insects and the light was beautiful and clear that day. I greatly
simplified the tangle of twigs and branches to paint this image of him as he took a
brief pause.
