“Love is Magical” is a new sculpture that has finally come to fruition since I started carving it almost 25 years ago. Like my story of love meeting my fiancé Jenny, it tells the magical story between two courting great blue herons. Although these birds are usually solitary, the male will try to attract a female at a heronry with a beautiful display of its plumes. In fact, my ancestor, William Bartram, was the first American artist/naturalist to describe and illustrate the great blue heron. Consequently, I have a deep spiritual connection with these birds. Carving, assembling, and unifying the two birds in different woods (dogwood and oak) was challenging. I used a process using hidden metal, wood bleach, and pigment to make this interpretive sculpture appear magical.
