"For this piece I again wanted to rely on expression and texture more than anything. The fact that it's a big male lion lying down, relaxed but alert is almost secondary to the almost brutal texture. The intensity of the eyes, the hanging jaw, the muscular forelegs and huge paws are the key features. The texture was created mostly by gouging and slashing with a broken piece of wood to create non geometric impressions that in my mind at least are reminiscent of the brutal and unpredictable lives that these animals live."
